Be careful if you include people who are loud snoring, difficulty sleeping, or wake up feeling tired. Research has shown that these conditions could be a sign of increased risk of heart disease and other health problems.
The team from the University of Pittsburgh, USA, examined the sleep quality of 800 people aged 45 to 74 years. Three years later found that people who snore loudly more than twice, chances of having metabolic syndrome, a precursor to heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. These include high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high triglycerides, and excess belly fat.
"Sleep problems are a big problem. It could have a negative impact on heart conditions, diabetes, and trigger a stroke and shorten life," says Jordan Josephson, MD, physician at Lenox Hill Hospital, United States, as quoted from news.health.com.
Previous studies have shown an association between insomnia and health problems like obesity and high blood pressure. However, the results of the research team from the University of Pittsburgh is following the development of someone who is having problems sleeping from time to time and see any risk of metabolic syndrome.
"Sleep deprivation is an epidemic which occurred almost in parallel with the obesity epidemic in an increase in the risk factors of heart disease and diabetes," said Virend Somers, MD, professor of the Mayo Clinic.
